Empower Your Patients with Workplace Accommodations

As a hearing care professional, you play a key role in helping patients with hearing loss understand and access their rights under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). The ADA ensures that individuals with hearing loss can request reasonable accommodations—such as Roger technology—to support communication and performance in the workplace.

This resource equips you with practical steps and tools to guide your patients through the ADA request process.

What is the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)?

The Americans with Disabilities act of 1990 (ADA) law that prohibits discrimination based on disability, including hearing loss. In the workplace, this means that employees are legally entitled to reasonable accommodations that support equal access—so long as the accommodation does not place undue hardship on the employer.

Assistive listening technology, such as Roger devices, may qualify under this provision. You can help your patients advocate effectively for these accommodations.

Download the Employee Assistance Guide for a step-by-step overview of the process, including FAQs.

Helping Patients Access Roger

1. Recommend the Appropriate Roger Solution

Assess your patient’s work environment and communication needs to determine the most suitable Roger device. Our Easy Guide can support this process.

2. Offer a Trial in the Workplace

Whenever possible, fit your patient with a Roger device for real-world evaluation. A trial can demonstrate tangible benefits and help justify the accommodation request to employers.

3. Provide Documentation

Help your patient compile the necessary documentation for an ADA accommodation request. This includes:

  • A recent audiological evaluation
  • A written recommendation detailing the need for Roger technology in the workplace

Download the Request Letter Template to provide to your patient so they  can submit it to HR or a direct supervisor.

4. Coordinate Fulfillment and Fitting

Once the accommodation is approved, schedule a final fitting or remote support session. If no additional services are needed, ensure the employer receives the invoice for direct payment.

ADA Tax Benefits for Employers

Employers may be more inclined to approve ADA requests when they understand available tax incentives:

IRS Section 44: Offers tax credits for eligible small businesses.

IRS Section 190: Allows a deduction for any business incurring expenses to remove access barriers or provide accommodations.
