HEARING AID TYPES

What are the different types of hearing aids?

Hearing aids come in four main types, each designed to fit differently in or around your ear. The right style for you depends on your hearing needs, comfort, appearance preferences, and lifestyle.

  • Receiver-in-canal (RIC): sits behind your ear, with a thin wire carrying sound to a receiver inside your ear canal. Its slim design offers a discreet option for mild to profound hearing loss.
  • Behind-the-ear (BTE): houses every component in one case behind your ear, which leaves room for more power and a larger battery. Fits mild to profound hearing loss and is the usual choice for children.
  • In-the-ear (ITE): custom-made to the shape of your ear, so the whole device sits in your ear with nothing behind it. Fits mild to severe hearing loss, depending on the model.
  • Extended wear: placed deep in your ear canal by a Lyric certified provider and worn continuously for months at a time, including while you shower, sleep, and exercise. Phonak Lyric is the world’s only 100% invisible hearing aid.

Which type of hearing aid is best for you?

Choose receiver-in-canal if you want the newest Phonak technology in a small device behind the ear. Choose behind-the-ear if you need the most power available, or you are fitting a child. Choose in-the-ear if you want nothing sitting behind your ear. Choose extended wear if you want a hearing aid that is invisible and that you never handle yourself. Your hearing care provider confirms which types your hearing loss can be fitted with.

Know which type you want? See the full range below and compare models side by side.
