Family-Oriented Communication Assessment and Solutions (FOCAS)

FOCAS is a tool designed to get input from both the client and their family during the hearing needs and goal-setting process. It encourages clients to open emotionally and share how they feel their hearing journey has impacted their family, while also encouraging client families to share how having a family member with hearing loss has had an impact on their lives as well. It provides a safe space to communicate openly and capture individual as well as shared goals.

Question Prompt List (QPL)

QPL are communication aids created to encourage patients and families to actively participate in discussions by inviting them to choose questions and topics they would like to discuss during an appointment. They provide important social and emotional support and encourage families to share their questions and concerns about their child’s journey with the audiologist. It provides families the opportunity to ask about diagnosis and facilitates the process of decision making and making informed choices.

How to get started with FCC

The Phonak FCC expert panel has developed ten easy steps to implement FCC in your practice. Here are the first three to get started:

Step 1 
Invite a family member to join audiology appointments, reinforcing the reasons why they should attend.

Step 2
Set up the physical environment so that family members are comfortably included in the consultation.

Step 3
Let the patient and family members know that their input will be encouraged during the appointment.

Through Phonak’s eLearning program, you can learn more about the importance of involving family members in the rehabilitation process, at your own pace. The series consists of seven modules designed to help you better understand and practice the principles of FCC.
