Insurance and Healthcare

After hearing loss is diagnosed, the next thought is how do patients learn to adapt and thrive. How can patients be supported while learning to live with hearing loss? Regardless of patients’ ages, insurance coverage and healthcare play an important role in accessing support for hearing loss, including access to devices which include hearing aids. As a hearing care professional, we know that supporting your patients is utmost important to you.

Regulations when counselling patients

When counselling patients on what hearing aids are available, there may be regulations in effect. These regulations may directly impact the patient’s experience with hearing aids. Some payers will only cover specific models while other health insurance may cover a percentage of the cost. Whatever payer is involved, access to Phonak’s store can provide support as to what insurance will cover.

Special Programs

Wherever you live and work, there are special programs that can help patients access hearing aids such as Government Services. As an HCP, your state may have state-specific programs that can help patients access hearing aid devices. Please check with your state’s website to confirm what programs may be available to your patients.

As a veteran, many former and active service members may need hearing aid devices. When working with patients who are veterans, there are devices and support provided to our former and current service members.

Why should my practice partner with a Third-Party Referral Network (TRPN)?

Managed Care – an opportunity for growth

There are several patients ready to seek help and happen to be covered by an insurance plan that covers hearing aids. Think about the impact on your business if you can fill appointment slots with patients that have a hearing aid benefit through a third-party referral network. As more new patients are seeking hearing aid support, you can support and empower these patients!

With nearly 40 million Americans with hearing loss1, more healthcare plans are offering hearing aid benefits as part of their healthcare benefits. Some plans use direct-to-consumer models which eliminate the HCP completely. Other healthcare plans reimburse HCPs for their services, which reduce costs.

To meet the needs of patients and providers, many health insurers have partnered with third party companies (third party referral networks – TPRN) to control costs by outsourcing the provider network, administration, and price negotiation to a third party. As more Americans put pressure on healthcare insurers to add additional coverage areas, hearing aid benefits are a good way for insurers to differentiation themselves from other insurers.
