Finding a Hearing Solution For Family Members

“Through the years, my hearing did get worse, but as many people do, I ignored it,” said Carolyn Hartfield, Lyric invisible hearing aid wearer. “You don’t know what you’re missing, because you’re missing it.”

Does missing out on life’s moments sound familiar for your loved one? They’re not alone. According to the Hearing Loss Association of America, 80 percent of people who would benefit from wearing a hearing aid do not wear one.

The stigma of wearing hearing aids might be what’s stopping them from moving forward with a hearing device. However, technology like completely invisible, invisible-in-canal (IIC) and completely-in-canal (CIC) hearing aids might make the stigma of hearing loss disappear.

What Does Invisible Look Like?

What are the differences between completely invisible, invisible-in-canal (IIC) and completely-in-canal (CIC)? According to Nicole Klutz, Au.D., Phonak Audiology Manager, it’s all in the placement:

  • Completely invisible hearing aids, like Lyric™, are inserted into the canal by a hearing care provider. They stay in the ear 24/7 for months at a time until the hearing aids are replaced by the professional.
  • Invisible-in-canal (IIC) hearing aids, Phonak VirtoB-Titanium, are super discreet custom-made devices that are inserted into the ear canal; they are designed to be removed daily.
  • Completely-in-canal (CIC) hearing aids, like Phonak Virto B-10 Wireless, are custom-made to sit completely in the ear canal. Only the tip of a small handle shows outside the canal. This is used to insert and remove the device.

Hearing Loss Affects All Ages

Does your loved one feel that wearing a hearing aid might make him/her look older? Hearing loss is misperceived to be a symptom of old age. However, 40 percent of the 48 million Americans with hearing loss are younger than 60.

“Invisible hearing aids are out of sight and therefore, ‘out of mind’ for the hearing aid wearer,” said Klutz. “They don’t have to worry about anyone seeing their hearing aid or potentially associating old age with hearing loss.”

Keeping Active

Completely invisible hearing aids don’t have to be manipulated or taken in or out of ears. “A completely invisible hearing aid allows wearers to live their life as they did before they started wearing the device,” said Klutz. “They don’t have to take their hearing aid out to use the phone, exercise or participate in activities they enjoy.”

Before her hearing aids, Hartfield couldn’t hear the waterfalls, leaves rustling in the breeze or birds singing, while other hikers could. Plus, she had to be face-to-face with other hikers to try to hear their conversations. “That all changed with invisible hearing aids,” she said. “Now I am part of the good times!”

Hassle-free Hearing

“Thanks to the placement of completely invisible hearing aids, the hearing aid wearer doesn’t have to worry about taking the hearing aid out and dropping it, stepping on it or misplacing it,” said Klutz.

Hartfield’s experience with invisible hearing aids have improved her life. She engages more, goes out more with friends and interacts more in conversations. “I am more confident and happier. My hearing aids have improved my life tenfold,” she added. “I love that I keep them in 24/7 … it means no hassles!”
